When Someday Is Now

Wayne Glowac

Sometimes we do things and save things “just in case.” That’s why we back up computer data, save for a rainy day and fasten our seat belts, whether the ride is bumpy or not. But what happens when “just in case” becomes “right now?”

Whether or not H1N1 turns out to be next great pandemic, it’s time to let your markets know that you’re ready for it.

Notice that “markets” is plural. That’s equally important to connect with both external and internal markets.

The general public isn’t going to know how healthcare organizations prepare for an emergency. Tell them about the systems and practices you have in place to handle something like the next pandemic.

You’ll change the nature of the public conversation.

Instead of scaring themselves with “what if” questions, community members will acquire useful information about what to do if they’re exposed to a disease, and how to prevent exposure in the first place.

And, although staff should be well aware of your emergency response systems, there’s nothing like a public airing of your plans to get everyone on the same page.

If you do it the right way, you’ll calm everyone down while preparing them for possible challenges.
