How Hospitals Are Handling the Economy

Dean Halverson

I’ve been truly amazed at the spectrum of choices that hospitals across the country are making to stay afloat during this recession.

Some are trying methods to attract and keep patients such as expanded hours, a shuttle-bus service, and programs for those struggling financially. http://www.freep.com/article/20090107/BUSINESS06/901070359

Others are scaling back, cutting some service-line promotion or opting not to use certain technologies.

Each hospital or provider is different; each requires a unique combination of added effort and penny-pinching. But those who see success know something that others don’t — the true wants and needs of their patients. Instead of deciding what service to add or cut, they let their consumers tell them, and are seeing positive results.

It’s time to sit down and analyze your organization’s strategy with the consumer in mind. Ask yourself these questions: What are you doing well? What could be better? What is your end goal?
